The short version

War of the Words doesn't ask you to create an account or hand over any personal details.

Stats stored on your device

War of the Words saves your game statistics (games played, wins, streaks, guess distribution and tiles destroyed), your progress on today's puzzle, and a random anonymous ID in your browser's local storage. The statistics and progress stay on your device. You can remove everything at any time by clearing your site data for warofthewords.co.uk.

Combined results

When you finish the daily puzzle, War of the Words sends a small anonymous record to our database so we can show combined results for all players on the Invasion Status page. The record contains: the puzzle number, whether you held off the fleet, how many guesses you used, how many tiles were destroyed, the random anonymous ID mentioned above, and a timestamp. It does not contain your name, email address, the words you guessed, or anything that identifies you. The ID lets us count each player once per puzzle and count how many different players there are.

We don't store your IP address with these records, although, as with any website, Cloudflare processes it in order to deliver the request. Random-word games aren't sent anywhere. Because the ID is random and anonymous, we can't tell which record is yours, so we can't look up or delete an individual record; clearing your site data simply stops any future records being linked to the same ID.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how many people visit the site and how it's used. Google Analytics may set cookies and collect information such as your approximate location, device and browser type, and the pages you view. This data is aggregated and we don't use it to identify you personally. You can learn more about how Google handles this data in Google's privacy information, and you can opt out with your browser settings or the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, and the combined results are stored in a Cloudflare D1 database. Like most hosts, Cloudflare may process technical information such as your IP address in order to deliver the site and keep it secure.

Sharing your result

If you press Share Result, your result is passed to your device's share sheet or copied to your clipboard. Pressing the button doesn't send anything to us.

Changes

If we change how War of the Words handles data, we'll update this page first.
